Speaker title: Molecular biologist, University Hospital Cologne
Sabine Merkelbach-Bruse, PhD, is a molecular biologist at the University Hospital Cologne, Germany. She received her PhD in 1994 from the RWTH Aachen in Molecular Plant Biology. After positions held in the University Hospitals in Aachen and Bonn, she moved to Cologne in 2011 where she is currently Head of Molecular Pathology Diagnostics at the University Hospital Cologne, Institute of Pathology. In 2004, she obtained the qualification as lecturer of Molecular and Experimental Pathology. Prof. Merkelbach-Bruse acts as coordinator of several quality assessment schemes in the field of molecular pathology and is responsible for the scientific management of training and education for molecular pathologists within the European Society of Pathology and the International Academy of Pathology. Since 2018, she is chair of the Task Force Molecular Diagnostics in the national Network Genomic Medicine.
Professor Merkelbach-Bruse’s research interests focus on molecular pathology and research for new biomarkers and development of new diagnostic tools.

Henning Reis is a professor of molecular pathology and the medical director of the department of Molecular Pathology at the Dr. Senckenberg Institute of Pathology, Goethe University Hospital in Frankfurt. He received his PhD from the University of Duisburg-Essen in 2010, where he also completed his training in pathology, and his habilitation in 2016, focusing on the detection, evaluation, and validation of predictive and diagnostic biomarkers in modern pathology using the example of oncological diseases and transplant pathology. Professor Reis has specialized over the years in the field of urachal cancer and uropathology and is a co-chairman at the uropathology section of the German Society of Pathology (DGP) and founder of the Urachalcancer.org Network.
